common questions

The questions people actually ask.

Answered openly and honestly. If yours isn’t here, it is a good thing to bring to the free appointment.

About the sessions

The first half is a conversation — what’s gone right since we last spoke, what you want to be different. The second half is quieter: you sit still, close your eyes if you want to, and we talk you into the settled state. That’s the state you drop into just before sleep, or twenty minutes into a motorway drive. In it, the brain stops defending itself long enough to learn something new.

No, and no. You’re awake, you can hear everything, you can open your eyes and stop whenever you like, and you’ll remember it afterwards. It’s closer to being absorbed in a film than to being unconscious. Nobody can make you do anything you wouldn’t otherwise do.

Almost everyone says this. It has never once been a problem. You don’t have to be good at relaxing — that part is our job.

No. We work forwards. Tell us as much or as little of the history as you want. Where something genuinely needs specialist trauma care, we’ll say so and help you find it.

About an hour, weekly to begin with.

About the time and the cost

For most things, eight to ten. A single straightforward phobia is often three or four. Some things take longer, and where that’s likely we tell you at the start rather than at session eight.

To be confirmed. The first, in-depth conversation is free.

We assess this together, as we go. If either of us feels your progress is stalling, we’ll have an honest conversation about what to do moving forwards. Continuing to take money for something that isn’t working goes against our standards.

Yes. No minimum, no obligation — it is always your decision when to stop.

About whether we’re right for you

Both work. Online isn’t the compromise version — for any issues involving leaving the house, it’s often the better place to start. In person across Kent, Essex and Surrey.

Probably, and the list is not exhaustive. Ask at the free appointment. If we’re not the right people we’ll tell you and point you somewhere better. Start with what we help with.

Usually not, and often it works well alongside. Tell your other therapist you’re doing both — anyone good will be fine with it.

That’s common and it’s not a barrier. We won’t ever suggest you change or stop it; that’s a conversation with the person who prescribed it.

Yes, very much so — though a parent or carer is involved throughout for under-16s.

No. If you think you may have an undiagnosed condition, your GP is the right first stop, and we’ll happily work alongside whatever comes of that.

About the app

No. The check-in, the journal, the breathing patterns and a starter set of recordings are free to anyone, and stay free. What’s in the app.

The app is free. The fuller version is switched on for people we are working with, as part of the work — but it can also be a standalone upgrade for full access. Pricing for that is to be confirmed.

No. There is no screen anywhere — for your therapist or for whoever runs the app — that shows what you have written. If we send you a recording, all we see back is whether you opened it.

Yes. On an under-18 account, check-ins and journal entries are written to the phone and never sent to us at all. The difference is that there is no backup: lose the phone and the history goes with it, which is said plainly at sign-up.

To be confirmed. It is being built for iPhone and Android at the same time. Ask to be told when it lands.

About your information

Yes. What you tell us stays between you and your therapist. The narrow exceptions — a risk to your life or someone else’s, or a court order — are the standard ones, and we’d tell you if we ever had to act on them.

Brief session notes, held securely, and your contact details. Nothing is sold or shared with anyone. See Privacy.

That you attended. Nothing else, ever.

If you need help sooner than we can give it

We’re not an emergency service and we don’t monitor the inbox out of hours. Contact your GP, call 111, or contact the Samaritans free — any hour, any day. If someone’s life is at immediate risk, call 999.
